By Car: Islay is linked to mainland Scotland by a regular ferry service operated from Kennacraig by Caledonian Macbrayne (www.calmac.co.uk or 0870 565 0000).
The crossings run up to four times daily and take around 2 hours. At peak times, ferries can be busy and so it is recommended that crossings are booked at the same time as the accommodation.
Allow up to 3 hours travel time from Glasgow as the 100 mile drive along the A82/A83 can be busy and slow at times.
The ferry will arrive at either Port Ellen or Port Askaig depending on crossing. Follow signs to Bridgend and then Bruichladdich. The private road to the cottage is about 1/4 of a mile after Bruichladdich on the right at the sign ‘Coultorsay’ (pron. Coul-torsa). Allow about 30 minutes to drive from either ferry terminal.
During the summer months, Calmac also operates a ferry service to Islay from Oban on Wednesdays, stopping at the island of Colonsay on the way. Check their website above for details.
By air: Loganair operates a daily service from Glasgow and (since March 2019) from Edinburgh to Islay. There are usually 2 flights daily from Glasgow and fares vary depending upon availability at time of booking. Book early to get the best fares. (www.loganair.co.uk)
Hebridean Air also offer a weekly service from Oban airport.
Car Hire: If flying to Islay, car hire is available from Cresswell Cars beside the airport (formerly MacKenzie’s Garage). (carhire@cresswellcars.com) tel. 01496 302300) and also from Islay Car Hire (info@islaycarhire.com) tel. 01496 810544).
Bus: There are regular bus services throughout the island but independent transport is required to access the more remote parts.
